How a term loan works
The partner pays out the full amount at the start. The business then pays it back in regular installments, often monthly, over an agreed term. Each installment carries interest on the balance still owed plus a slice of the balance itself, so the debt falls with every payment until it reaches zero or until a final balloon is due.
Term loans suit spending that has a beginning and an end: a kitchen remodel, a new service bay, a second location, the purchase of a competitor's customer list, or replacing several expensive debts with one.
Who tends to need one in Comanche County, OK
Growth projects usually come from businesses past the one-person stage. In 2023 Comanche County had 431 employer establishments with 5 to 9 employees, 333 with 10 to 19 and 199 with 20 to 49 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). A firm at that size adding a crew, a chair or a service line often needs more than a month's revenue at once, which is what a term loan is designed for.
Sector details live under financing by industry, and the county's employer counts are on the Lawton, OK page.
Reading a term loan's amortization schedule
Amortization is the schedule that spreads the balance over the payments. Early payments are mostly interest, because the balance is at its largest; later payments are mostly principal. Two loans with the same rate and amount but different amortization periods have very different monthly payments and very different total interest.
You can see this yourself with the payment calculator: enter the amount, the annual rate from an offer and the term in months, and it returns the monthly payment, total interest and total repaid.
Balloon payments on commercial loans
Some term loans calculate payments as if the loan ran for a long period but make the remaining balance due much sooner. That remaining sum is the balloon. Payments are lower along the way, but a large amount falls due at the end, and the business must pay it, refinance it or sell an asset to cover it. If an offer has a balloon, write down its date and size and decide now how it will be handled.
What is a loan covenant?
A covenant is a promise in the contract that lasts as long as the loan. Some require the business to keep a certain cash balance or ratio, send financial statements on a schedule or carry insurance; others prohibit taking on more debt or selling major assets without consent. A broken covenant can put the loan in default even with every payment made, so go through them with your accountant before you sign.
Clearing the balance ahead of schedule
Often, but not always for free. Some contracts charge a prepayment fee or require the interest for a minimum period regardless of when the balance is cleared. Others let you pay early and save the remaining interest. Ask the partner directly and find the clause in writing; it changes the real cost if you expect a large receivable or a sale that could clear the loan ahead of schedule.
Comparing a term loan with other options
When the cost is for one piece of equipment, equipment financing secures the loan with that asset and may suit better. When the need is a series of smaller costs over time, a line of credit avoids paying interest on money you are not yet using. Every type is set side by side on the comparison page, and the Oklahoma loan guide lists the documents to gather first.
